He failed. That was Gabriel’s first thought as his consciousness returned. Alice asked him to win and come back to her, but he failed to get the victory she desired. Worse yet was that he basically acted on instincts towards the latter parts of the battles, more beast than man as he just focused on beating down his opponents. And then he passed out, having achieved not a single thing, and possibly just having made things worse. It was just pathetic. He was an embarrassment. He seemed to be lying down,…

Fast. Efficient. More than a tad lucky. Those were Arioch’s thoughts when he saw Gabriel defeat Quinn. Gabriel was younger than most of the knights on the Barong side so it would only be natural if he was a bit physically weaker. He also seemed aware of that possibility and hence chose a quick deflect that relied on his opponents power. He trusted his decision and moved at the same time, and that trust and planning coupled with the carelessness of his own men to produce a quick defeat. Definitely lucky…

Breaths too fast, lungs too rushed to properly draw each breath. Arms need oxygen, legs need it too, brain will shut down if ignored. Annoying, too many things that needed air, not enough breaths to go around. Metal on metal, what a damn grating sound it was. It came from the left so it wasn’t the arm he used to hold his blade. Did he block? Hmmm, yes, seems like it. Grabbed the blade as it fell and pulled it aside. Effective, but now that palm and elbow hurt from the force. Gnats. Gnats. Gnats. Nothing…

"Berrit Penton. Knight-in-training of the Barong Duchy. Please enlighten me." With Quinn taken care of, the Barong estate sent out their next knight, a pair of blue eyes moving somewhat anxiously behind the visor. Gabriel’s gaze slid to the side for a moment before he raised his sword and returned the greeting. "Gabriel, no last name. Knight-in—training of Alice De Vritara. Please take care of me." Normally, this would be the time for the knights to charge at each other to kick off the duel. In the…

*Putting it twice for those who don't read author notes. As the title says, this is a redux of chapter 40. To be more specific, its the original draft I had in mind for the chapter. After going over all the comments, i did decide to redo the last two chapters so that they are more in line with what I envisioned for my story, so thank you to everyone who commented.* The training grounds of the Barong duchy was rather different from the one in the Vritara estate. Circular patches of segregated earth were…

Right, you've all noticed it, the last two chapters were... strange. I'll be frank about it, I didnt want to write them like that. I fucked up on chapter 40 because I wanted to add in some action to please people, and when the comments pointer out that i fucked up the main character i made another bad chapter which only worsened it because it was cheap and rushed. I wasnt happy, yoy werent happy with it, it all sucked and I didn't even want to read the comments on the newest chapter. Personally I would…

*As the title states, this chapter is no longer canon because I cannot stand the fact that I wrote it. I'm keeping it up to remind me of my shame and what not to do* Tap Gabriel sat in the room that had been provided to him, one finger tapping the wooden desk while another tapped his temple. A lone candle was lit in front of him, the flickering flames reflected in his gaze as he stared into them. Tap The sparring matches were over and Arioch had given Hellion a suitable punishment for insulting Alice…

*As the title states, this chapter is no longer canon because I cannot stand the fact that I wrote it. I'm keeping it up to remind me of my shame and what not to do* "These are the men who will take part in this first round of sparring matches, they are some of our finest knights-to-be." Arioch introduced the men he had picked out when everyone arrived at the Barong training grounds. It was mostly the same as the Vritara training grounds except here it was just one large metal square. There were grooves…

"We meet again, Young Master Woodime. I didn’t know that you would be here as well, but I hope we can get along during our stay." Alice returned Caine’s greeting with a curtsy but didn’t finish it off by offering her hand for a kiss. She heard the sound of hooves from behind her and saw Caine’s eyes glide past her, her own gaze narrowing. She really hadn’t expected Caine to be here, she would have hidden Gabriel better if she did. Caine hadn’t warned her as Abigail did, but what if he knew…

"Alice… What did you just give me?" Gabriel felt something strange in him after the light settled in his body. It was like a light stream around his heart, separate from the stars he was already forming there for his own magic. And then there was the mark that appeared on Alice’s chest, which he could just barely catch a glimpse of due to how she rested her head in his hands. "A covenant. One shared only by the two of us." Her head turned slightly as she nestled in his hands, her ears perking up for…
