Arthur and Brixaby stood on a hill and looked out at the city ahead of them. It was hard to miss. Entirely encircled by steep brick walls, the buildings inside were arranged by height. The ones at the citys edge closest to the wall were the shortest. Each row further back was built slightly higher, allowing for windows or balconies to peek just over the ones in front. This repeated, row after row, until the buildings reached over twenty stories high in the middle. Plus, every building seemed to be made…

Arthur was unsurprised to see a purple courier dragon with a golden sash waiting for him right on the other side. Well, they hadnt come in quietly. Hive leadership would have been alerted by the portal and the missing dragons spilling out. What do you want? Brixaby demanded of the purple. The officious dragon puffed himself up. Leader Whitaker demands to see you at once. Brixaby snorted and shouldered past the purple, instead heading for Valentinas cave. Elissa was drowsing on her ledge. In the full…

The next few hours were a blur. Arthur did his best not to walk through them in an unthinking fog. Later, Brixaby insisted he had conducted himself as well as any Legendary rider should. Arthur wasnt sure he agreed, but he appreciated the attempt to cheer him up. Most of his attention was spent on rescue, organization of remaining resources, and the beginning of cleanup. The scourgelings had followed the Mind Singer like bees after their queen. Because she wore a dragons body, no one still fighting…

Just before Brixaby let his shout loose, the sounds of flapping wings brought Arthurs attention up. Several dragonsmore of the Mind Singers thrallshad just burst through the top of the stone room via an aerial tunnel. They must have been laying in wait for this moment, protected against Brixabys previous shouts. There was one yellow, one blue, a silver, and a pink. Their scales bounced back the last of Lairds candle-top flames. These were all shimmer-quality dragons. One, the blue, was definitely a high…

Arthurs area-of-effect Mental Shield skill snapped up into place. That was all that kept him, and everyone else, from keeling over. The sharp drilling pain stopped. Arthur glanced at his mind-block anchor card and saw that the bar was rapidly running dry. Perhaps ten percent left. As he watched, it dipped by another small notch. If not for that and his skill . . . He glanced back up at the white dragon. She sat in the middle of the room on a slightly raised platform surrounded by eggs. She was just as…

Digger! Its time. Arthur couldnt hear himself over the scream of wind as they fell almost straight down, but Brixaby could, and must have relayed the message to the brown dragon. Their dive was so fastwings tucked and noses pointed down with the riders pressed against their dragons necksthat none of the attacking dragons could reach them. And if they could, they would have surely been bowled out of the way. No one bothered. To all outsiders, the dive looked entirely suicidal. Some hopefuls watched with…

With Arthur and Brixaby leading the front, the rest of his retinue shifted into a blade formation. It was a formation Arthur had learned in class in his first months in Wolf Moon Hive but never had the opportunity to take part in. But with people he trusted, it felt seamless. Arthur and Brixaby were in front. Joy and Cressida flew behind and just off center to the right. Sams and Horatio took the spot behind and just to the left. As one of their most offensively based dragons with ranged magic, Laird…
