By doing the math, the next match was either going to include me, Yr'Arl or perhaps even both of us if that was the way the cookie crumbled. I'd probably end up feeling pretty bad if I had to take Yr'Arl out so early in the competition. He deserved to make it through to at least the semi-finals, but if I did have to take him out then I knew that I had it in me to do exactly that. "If we end up having to fight before the finals," I said, "You'll go all out on me, right? You won't hold back just so we…

As was so often the case with him, it was Akash that ended up making the first move. Thick vines made out of tree roots erupted from the edge of the craggy clifftop and launched themselves across the open air straight toward Xyalla. But the rotund alien wasn't going to allow any attacks to hit them that easily. Xyalla knocked one vine whip away with a telekinetic blast that sent it crashing back down into the rocky cliff face before dodging the second with a dip and a dive. Their flight was scarily…

Twin flashes of light whisked away both Akash and Xyalla. I settled into my seat and put my empty plate down to the side. The meal had been good, but this fight was going to be even better. I was hoping that I'd get to see Akash get genuinely pushed up to his limits. The only time I'd ever really seen that before was in his fights with me, and then I hadn't really gotten the chance to observe and enjoy his fighting techniques because… well… I was the one that was fighting him. Besides, we'd all…

After what felt like hours, but really could have only been seconds, the beam of green lightning finally cut off and Ke'Zuc's gaping maw snapped shut, tentacles slithering back over the gap they had made to the core. The tentacles on the bottom portion of Ke'Zuc's strange body began to writhe and twist, faster and faster until little spurts of electrical green static flickered out from them. In a few moments the writhing mass of snake-like tentacles had started floating up into the air, elevated on a bed…

Akash disembarked from the floating anti-gravity field that was serving as his hospital bed and walked back over to where Yr'Arl and I were waiting. Nonchalant, as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened at all. He sat down and stretched out, whatever he used for internal bones popping and clicking in a way that I could only imagine was intensely satisfying. "So you literally aren't going to mention what just happened in there?" I asked, leaning over to get a look at his now regenerated normal…

As was so often the case with him, it was Akash that ended up making the first move. Thick vines made out of tree roots erupted from the edge of the craggy clifftop and launched themselves across the open air straight toward Vadton. Whether he was trying to scout out Vadton's power levels or actually go for a one-shot killing blow I didn't know, but the vines lanced outward with incredible speed, breaking through some of the floating islands and ripping them apart as they went. Either way, Vadton was…

Twin flashes of light whisked away both Akash and Vadton. I settled into my seat and put my empty plate down to the side. The meal had been good, but this fight was going to be even better. "Before the next rounds begin there will be a short intermission, so those of you in the stands feel free to grab some more snacks and use any of the facilities available!" Squadron Leader Belana announced. "We'll be back soon with the first match of the second round, which will be Vadton fighting off against Akash!" That was sure to be an exciting match. I remembered Vadton being the potbellied alien with the psychic abilities that were said to be able to overwhelm any opponent. If Akash had any…

I was disappointed by the amount of XP the fight had given me, I'd earned more from the sparring matches against Akash and Yr'Arl, but the fact of the matter was Tresourian had been nowhere close to their level. Whether it was by pure chance or some cosmic destiny, it seemed like I had become friends with two of the strongest beings that were in the tournament. The medical AI finished fussing over me and seemed to give me a clean bill of health considering it floated away and melded back into the wall.…

While my punch backed up by my energy blast had clearly been powerful, it hadn't been enough to take my adversary out in a single hit. They lifted themselves off the ground with some kind of propulsion ability of their own. Jets of air rippled out of the palms of their hands, similar to the repulsors in Tony Stark's Iron Man suit. "If that's the hardest you can hit, you're going to be in trouble human," Tresourian said before diving toward me, still in the air. It was all I could do to drop down into…
