Hello all! If you haven't heard already, Seaborn is going to have to go on hiatus soon. Note when I say "hiatus" I really do mean "an break that will end". I won't be able to write or post for the next couple of months (until the end of the year). I just wnated to let you know how I've set things up! There are 6 more chapters incoming that I've set to release once a week until the end of August. These will follow the normal release schedule. Once those are posted, the story will "officially" be on hiatus.…

With my purse replenished, I returned to my training regimen with a will. A gold coin was usually enough for a sailor to spend weeks ashore living high on the best he could buy, lazing about and drinking his fill of overpriced alcohol and hangover cures. The regular tutelage of both Renshaw and Kane ate through coin much faster than standard room and board, however. Their services were not exclusive. Kane was often juggling a number of students who came to him for training, and when he had more than he…

I really wished I knew what manner of creature had claimed the This was the problem with knowledge granted by the world! Sometimes it was incredibly useful, miraculous even. Other times it was frustrating and misleading. I decided that I wanted to make the most of the time I had. Whatever occupant normally inhabited the The second reason was I’d just diced up 123 drowners. The tidal forces might affect what creatures showed up, but that was definitely going to garner some interest. There was no…

The next morning I went straight to Renshaw’s and found him meditating out back again. I sat down a bit stiffly with a slight groan. “You all right?” he asked me. “Fine, fine.” I said. “Just slept wrong is all.” “Chipper yesterday and groaning this morning. You sure you didn’t find a girlfriend?” “Unless you count a bunch of drowners trying to make a snack out of me,” I said, rubbing my sore arm. Renshaw nodded to my motion. “Injury?” “Oh, not from them. They were just…

Despite the increased number of scavengers and predators in the water, I slept better on my little fishing boat down on the bottom than I had in a long time. I was up in the early hours of pre-dawn light, and before I met with Renshaw I stopped by a bathhouse. It was only a few hours before I’d be back in the sea, but I wanted to get cleaned up the normal way this morning. For a few extra coppers I got scented oils to add to the bathwater, though when I made the attendant tell the truth she said my…

I looked up into Renshaw’s eyes and saw the warrior. This was the man who’d gained his levels and expanded his profession by killing those he met in war. He went from calling me ‘friend’ to holding a conjured knife at my throat. If I’d had the drop on him, I still couldn’t hope to overpower him. He had an arsenal of spells and the mana pool to use them. He had me. “Okay, okay! You know that quest the king posted about Davy Jones lieutenant?” I waited for him to nod slightly. “Well, I…

I leapt back into the My instinct was to sit tight and wait for the creature to move on. Sitting tight sounded good until I looked behind me and saw another tentacle in the hold. It only seemed to be inching along, looking for more snacks, but having it around made me feel like my hiding spot was way too vulnerable. I dropped into stealth and lay prone, then slipped outside the hold, swimming just above the muck of the sea floor, dragging my trident along with me. I tried no to disturb the silt, and…

When I woke I felt better than I had any right to. I came to realize that it may have been because I’d slept longer than I should have, nearly an entire day. Normally I’d wake based on my work schedule or the rhythms of noise around me. Since I’d begun sleeping underwater I’d noticed that I felt the changes in the tide as it went through its stages. After my exhaustion yesterday, I’d been oblivious to all of these. I didn’t test the full movement of my right arm, I could tell it was still…

Renshaw and I joined his class indoors. The kids were smart: they didn’t clamor over Renshaw or wail about the danger. Some looked more stressed and panicked than others, but they kept themselves in check. Renshaw directed them away from the window he wanted to observe from and ordered in no uncertain terms that if fighting broke out on the street they were to shelter in a separate room. I joined Renshaw by the window, taking advantage of my status as his friend. I noticed that while Bing wasn’t…

I woke early the next morning but didn’t immediately head to Renshaw’s for breakfast. That was difficult, because there was a knot of hunger in my belly that wanted to go intrude on the wizard’s hospitality as soon as possible. Nevertheless, if I was going to spend a significant portion of the day ashore, I’d have to be cognizant of how much time I had on my Uproot ability. I had eight hours on land before I died. Long before that I’d be uncomfortable, not only feeling the pull of the sea but…
